Meeting the needs of modern healthcare: Bristol Dental School is on the move

After more than 80 years at its current site on Lower Maudlin Street, Bristol Dental School is moving to a purpose-built space at 1 Trinity Quay. The new site is close to Temple Meads Station and the proposed new university campus at Temple Quarter.

At a time when dentistry in England is in crisis, Bristol Dental School (part of the University of Bristol) are working towards meeting the needs of disadvantaged members of the community.

Spanning 7,300 square meters and with 119 dental chairs, the school says their new facility will enable students to work as part of multi-professional teams. Being alongside trainees in dental hygiene, therapy, and nursing mirrors the environment of real-world practice. This will also help trainees to develop the interpersonal skills needed to succeed in the primary care world where most of them will spend their careers.

The South West has some of the highest unmet needs for dental care in England, with serious impacts on the quality of life of our population. The school has plans to work with local communities to improve awareness and prevention of oral diseases. They also hope that the relocation in 2023 will open up academic and career opportunities for those from disadvantaged communities who wish to pursue a career in dentistry.

We plan to engage with local schools where pupils might not necessarily think a career in dentistry is an option for them. We’re also committed to creating a safe, welcoming and inclusive learning and working environment, with role models for all to aspire to.
