Queues outside newly-opened dental practice highlight desperate state of NHS dentistry

People were once again queuing outside the newly-opened dental practice in St Pauls this morning, in hopes of registering for NHS dental care.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we've received almost 700 negative pieces of feedback from people struggling to access NHS dentistry.

People have shared shocking details of how their lives have been disrupted; affecting their ability to work, look after their family, causing financial hardship, and excluding some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

Our biggest concerns are for people living in areas where health outcomes are already low. Many of those who have shared their experiences with us are also vulnerable. We've heard from disabled people, people with long-term health conditions, and people living in poverty. We have also voiced our concern for children and young people, and the possible impact on their dental health for decades to come.

Over the past few years, your dental feedback has been shared with local and national health systems. Our evidence has been heard at a Parliamentary Select Committee, NHS England meetings, at South West Dental Network Meetings, and local Health and Wellbeing Boards.

Healthwatch will continue to share concerns so that changes to dentistry deliver a better service and focus on people who need the most support.
